What Are The Typical Health Insurance Premiums In The US?

In health insurance, two major factors affect policy premiums or rates. The first major factor is your family health or personal health history. The second factor is age.

While calculating the life insurance premiums and health insurance premiums, the insurance companies, consider family history and personal health of the individual, as the major contributors. Most health insurance companies request urine samples and blood samples to ensure that there are no pre-existing health problems.

Health Check

Most insurers offer policies with higher premium amounts to people, suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and other health risks.

People who have perfect health can observe that the standard term policy may have more premiums simply, because such policy covers most health risks. This policy is good for those people, who do not have time to lower their risk factors and can afford to pay huge premiums.

Thus, before applying for policy, people can check out various online quotes that can help them to locate a guaranteed issue policy. Moreover, people can also refer to FAQ's to see, what factors they need to consider while obtaining an ideal health coverage plan.

Unfortunately, even though policyholders can have low insurance premiums, family history and health are not always controllable. Therefore, such people may have to pay high premium amount.

Some Statistics:

In the early part of the decade, typical health insurance premiums skyrocketed with an annual growth of 10.8 %. In the year 2003, the premium growth shockingly remained strong, before it decreased to 8 % in the year 2004. Right from the year 1982, health insurance premiums have registered an average 7% annual growth. For health insurance premiums, volatile business cycle is very typical thing.

In the year 1992, health insurance constituted 6.3 % of the employee compensation for the private industry employers. In the month of September 2007, health benefits comprised a large portion of employer provided benefits. This included 7.1% of the entire compensation. This made health insurance the largest compensation share for employers having an excess of 500 employees.

The moment the costs escalated, most employers passed their increased premium on to their employees. This has really just shifted the problem.

An aging population has a significant impact on the future of health care industry in the United States. In terms of pharmaceutical treatment, in-patient care stays and physician visits, the elderly are the most high-cost demographic groups.

The main cause of rising health insurance premiums are the aging population. An aging population creates huge problems in terms of the Medicare Program, since it attempts to fund the services of at least 22 % of the total population.

It is important for people, to pay their monthly premiums on time. Some insurance firms also provide discounts for such people. Secondly, it is also essential that the policyholders compare various health insurance plans. Thereafter, they can select the best plan amongst them all.

Health insurance has become an extremely important issue in America due to spiraling health costs. Thus, easy to pay typical health insurance premiums can ensure coverage for majority of American population.

Tennessee Health Insurance: Will Healthcare Reform Help You Get Coverage?

Healthcare reform will start increasing protection for those who need health insurance in Tennessee as of September 23, 2010. That protection will expand coverage to more people and extend coverage beyond previous insurance limits. More people will be able to keep their Tennessee health insurance plans because insurers will no longer be allowed to cancel your policy if you get sick. That provision alone can help to protect people who buy Tennessee individual health insurance plans from dishonest insurance practices.

Your choice of doctors will increase, too. Woman will no longer have to get prior authorization to see an ob-gyn doctor. Members in new health insurance plans will also be free to select any participating primary care provider. September 23 also sounds the death toll for the practice of denying children who have known health problems, such as asthma, access to health insurance. If your child has had to endure years in this predicament, you can start to relax soon.

Health Check

Adults with known health problems are also getting more help. As of last July 1, .8 million federal dollars was made available to Tennessee to provide coverage for people with pre-existing conditions who have been denied health insurance in Tennessee.

This new transitional high-risk pool program is funded completely by the federal government to help people survive until the health insurance exchange becomes available in 2014. If Tennessee does not to run the high-risk pool program, the Federal government will administer it for Tennessee residents. If your medical claim is denied, you'll also be getting additional help with that. New Tennessee health insurance plans will be required to develop an appeals process to make it easier for you to dispute the denial of your medical claims.

Health Insurance In Tennessee Will Have Fewer Limits

If you are among the 3.2 million Tennessee residents who rely on private insurance coverage, you can stop worrying about being left to face devastating out-of-pocket costs when your bills exceed lifetime limits placed on your coverage. Insurance companies will no longer be able to restrict your coverage to such lifetime limits. In addition, the use of annual limits on coverage will be regulated so you are not denied access to needed care. This will protect the 2.8 million residents who get Tennessee health insurance from an employer as well as those who get new health plans in Tennessee.

What Does Healthcare Reform Mean For Small Businesses?

The 71,900 small businesses in Tennessee can take advantage of the new small business tax credit. This credit is designed to help them provide coverage for employees and to make premiums more affordable. Until now, small businesses have unfairly had to pay 18 percent more, on average, than large businesses paid for the same healthcare coverage. That prevented many small businesses from protecting their employees with healthcare.

Will Seniors Be Affected By Healthcare Reform?

In 2009, about 85,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Tennessee lost coverage for their prescriptions as they sank into the infamous "doughnut hole." That's a huge gap in Medicare Part D drug coverage that takes away all coverage for prescription drugs. Seniors have been forced to cut their medications in half or go without all together. In 2010, Tennessee Medicare beneficiaries who are stuck in the doughnut hole are automatically being mailed a 0 rebate check. These mailings began in mid-June and the 0 checks will continue to be mailed each month as additional seniors lose their prescription coverage to the doughnut hole.

Healthcare reform continues to provide seniors with additional discounts in future years until no one will be subjected to the doughnut hole by 2020.

What if you retire before you're eligible for Medicare at age 65? It's estimated that 84,700 Tennessee residents do retire before they are eligible for Medicare. With the rising cost of insuring employees, fewer employers now cover their retirees. As of June 1, 2010, a temporary reinsurance program has been set up to support the practice of companies providing health care for their retirees. Not only companies, but also local and state governments and unions are all eligible to participate in this -billion program.

How Does Healthcare Reform Affect Tennessee Residents In 2010?

With healthcare reform, those who already have insurance won't have that coverage taken away if they get sick or if they need help that exceeds annual or lifetime policy limits. Children with pre-existing conditions who have been denied coverage will get help this September, and .8 million federal dollars is already available to Tennessee to provide coverage for adults with pre-existing conditions who have been denied coverage in Tennessee.

Seniors automatically receive 0 in 2010 when they lose prescription drug coverage to the doughnut hole, and Tennessee businesses, local and state governments and unions can take advantage of a -billion program to cover retirees with insurance. That's not the end of healthcare reform, though. More benefits will become available in 2014.

Illness Symptom Checker - Checking For Symptoms Can Lead You to the Cause

Medical science treats the symptoms of disease, and indeed the symptoms of any given illness can tell you much about disease itself, but treating the symptoms will tell you little of the cause. An illness symptom checker can be beneficial for those who want to assure themselves that their worries about their health are unfounded, or even to discover that a given symptom is a warning that some corrective action be taken. The checking for symptoms will not, however, give the reasons for having them. To rid yourself of a symptom the cause would have to be uncovered and corrected.

Medical science tells us that the cause of illness and disease is due to environmental factors, bad habits like smoking, over eating, poor diet, genetic abnormalities, viruses and any number of other external factors.

Health Check

It is the opinion of this author that the reasons for disease are not to be found in a laboratory or research clinic but that the knowledge of the causes are within our minds. This statement may seem ludicrous to many of you but I challenge you not to dismiss this premise before you read the whole article and digest what I have to say.

Despite all appearances, exterior conditions do not cause disease, illness and bad health. The causes of disease are rooted in mental and emotional states that change and alter the physical structure. Science would surely find such a concept not worthy of serious consideration because mental states, i.e. thoughts and beliefs are not considered real in the same sense that physical objects are. Thoughts have an electro-magnetic charge and structure however, and can be measured in terms of energy. The mental creates the physical, not the other way around.

Find and change the ideas and beliefs that are causing the illness and the symptoms will begin to clear themselves. Disease is not thrust on us from the outside. There is a reason and purpose behind disease. Sometimes illness can even be beneficial, for it can lead us into realms of understanding that were not open beforehand. Many will not accept the idea that illness is self-generated because we believe that no one would choose such an experience.

When energy is blocked from expression, however, when our own ideas and beliefs are at cross purposes with themselves an impasse is reached. The energy that is blocked manifests itself in the areas of the body that dutifully reflect an "inner" problem or challenge that is not being dealt with. The good news is that you can change the state of your health now and begin to live life again with exuberance and vitality. Checking for symptoms of illness has its place but getting to the root of the problem is more important.

You can find out more about these concepts and get on the road to health now. Visit the link below.

Popular Health Websites

The technological world is changing so much that it's hard to keep up. Imagine; in the days of Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Baker made his house calls for the townspeople of Walnut Grove without a thought that one day doctors would be able to make house calls of sorts without leaving their office. Of course, their world was fictional, but the concept was not; and now, the new-age house call is just as nonfiction a tale as ever. There are many websites in present day that give you an enormous amount of information on ways to diagnose yourself, or even enlist the advice of a medical professional. So the next time you're feeling under the weather, maybe you'll be able to find refuge in some of these popular health websites.

Health Check

WebMD is probably the most popular and trusted of the many health websites out there. I heard of this website many years ago in the same way many people do. One day, I was coughing up a storm, but my cough was more aggressive and painful than I was ever used to. I called for an appointment with my doctor but he couldn't fit me in until the next day, so I called the next best person - my best friend - to complain about my coughing fits. She told me that there was a website called WebMD that might be able to diagnose my symptoms, so I tried it out.

As soon as I entered the site, I found a symptom checker icon with a picture of a body next to it. I clicked on the picture of the body and was taken to the symptom checker page which asked me first if I was male or female. Afterward, I answered questions about where I was experiencing pain. I clicked the chest area then answered a series of questions regarding the specifics of my chest pains. After my symptoms were determined by the checker, it was suggested that I call my doctor for an immediate appointment within 1 day. Since I had an appointment the next day, I went to find out that I had a sinus infection - not too serious, but enough to require antibiotics and prescription cough medicine for a month.

WebMD labels itself as "the leading source for trustworthy and timely health and medical news and information." And aside from having this handy symptom checking tool, they offer up-to-date information on a variety of medical topics, and even have what they call "health centers" that focus on various medical conditions from acne and asthma to sleep disorders and strokes. In addition, they offer information on the top 12 health topics, the most common treatments, diet assessments, necessary nutrients, drugs, skin care and so much more - in sum, this website has an overwhelming wealth of information. With everything they have available, it is no wonder that many believe it is one of the best health websites available.

KidsHealth is another one of the many health websites available - and like WebMD it is very highly-ranked, said to be the most visited site regarding children's health. When you first enter the site, you are given three mini health websites to visit: the site created for adults, the one created for kids, and the one created for teenagers. I decided to start with the parents' website first to see what information they had available. On this site, they list a variety of links to choose from, depending on what you're interested in learning. Some of the links include infections, emotions and behavior, medical problems, and doctor and hospital information. Also, they give parents helpful tips in being able to positively care for their children as well as dealing with emotional and behavioral issues. In sum, this part of the site works to look at health from the parent's perspective to help them be a better health administrator to their child.

Of the three mini health websites, the kids' site offers the most kid-friendly information developed to help them learn with a little fun in tow. There are spelling bees related to health topics, recipes for health and fun foods, articles about growing up, understanding the body, and dealing with feelings, and even a glossary of medical terms written in very easy to understand definitions. There is a section of the site called "Watch Out" that discusses ways to stay safe around the house (gun safety, dog bites, and the rules of the Internet), outside of the house (bee stings, bike safety, and poison ivy) and emergencies and first aid. And a section called Kids Talk allows children to ask their own questions and have them answered for everyone to see.

Finally, the teens' mini site let's teenagers explore the idea of getting older and how they can relate to their bodies. The topics on their page include understanding the body, sexual health, infections, food and fitness. There is a section that discusses drugs and alcohol and the topics include the need to stop smoking, the affects of marijuana and other drugs, and even coping with an alcoholic parent. Like the kids site, they offer different recipes that are healthy and easy to make for teens, like lasagna, turkey chili, cornbread and oatmeal, and they also have a similar Q&A section that allows teens to have their personal issues resolved in anonymity. The three mini health websites are great ways to help people understand the health of those under 18 and allows them to comprehend in their own unique ways.

These two health websites are just a few of the many available. But they are the most popular in that they are densely populated with very helpful information. WebMD gives adults a vast amount of topics to choose from and covers almost every area in the medical profession allowing its visitors the opportunity to become educated in terminology they can understand. And KidsHealth gives adults, teens and children a way to understand health education, also without having to rely on physicians for definitions when they are not always available or easily understood. So if you are ever in need of medical information and don't know where to turn, I strongly suggest you consider these two health websites to enhance your understanding of you or your child's well being.

Symptoms of OCD - How to Check If You Have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that can affect adults and children alike. The most common symptoms of OCD are repeated obsessions or compulsions but the most striking of its symptoms is anxiety.

Obsessions are recurrent thoughts or impulses that are considered inappropriate and may cause marked anxiety or distress. On the other hand, compulsions are defined as repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person is driven to perform because of an obsession.

Health Check

If you have obsessive compulsive disorder, you may have obsessive thoughts like fear of dirt and germs, overconcern with order, neatness and symmetry, preoccupation with checking or counting, or fear of doing anything embarrassing. It is normal to think about hygiene and being clean, but in obsessive compulsive behavior, this concern is too much that it often alienates people in your surrounding.

Aside from these obsessive thoughts, you may also have compulsive behaviors like frequent washing of hands, taking showers, brushing your teeth more often than normal, cleaning, putting everything in order, or double checking locks and switches to ensure that you have turned them off.

However, all the symptoms of OCD mentioned above may vary from one person to another. People with OCD who have depression may also experience suicidal feelings.

If you have children with this disorder, you may also notice them repeating actions until they find it right. These actions may be as simple as going to and fro, going up and down the stairs or rewriting their homework. You have to understand too that if you are dealing with children having this kind of disorder, they may also develop fear to go to school or leave home and the people they feel comfortable with. However, children with OCD may not grow up with this disorder as anxiety may change over time.

Other obsessive thoughts that are also symptoms of OCD include excessive attention given to religious or moral values or anything that you might consider lucky or not. You might also develop fear to cause harm to yourself or to other people and to lose things that you might need. Another compulsive behavior of people with OCD is collecting "junk" stuffs like old magazines, newspapers, or empty containers.

These obsessive thoughts are usually unwanted, and though they come from your own mind, they are often impossible to control.

People with obsessive compulsive disorder also have aggressive impulses, sexually explicit thoughts, or violent images in their mind. And these obsessions and compulsions really cause distress and significantly intervene with a person's normal activities, occupational or academic routines, or even personal relationships. The disorder becomes disturbing because when you or someone dear to you has OCD, you may feel helpless and isolated. It may also cause you additional illness or discomforts like dermatitis due to frequent washing of hands, skin lesions caused by frequent picking of your skin, or hair loss due to hair pulling. However, the disturbance caused by the disorder is not due to the physiological effects of any substance or medical condition.

Usually, the onset of this disorder occurs during adolescence and symptoms of other disorders like autism and attention deficit disorder may also look like OCD. That's why a thorough psychological and medical examination is needed before making any diagnosis.

Vitamins and Supplements For Prostate Health

Men over forty should always be concerned with prostate health and get regular check-ups. Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer related deaths in men. It is the number one cause of cancer related deaths in men over seventy-five. Even after over fifty years of research, there is no known cure for prostate cancer. Still, studies have shown promise that early detection, diet, and proper vitamin and mineral intake, can help you keep your prostate healthy.

Prostate tumors are made of living tissues that actually leech vitamins and nutrients from your system, leaving you more vulnerable to the disease. This is why it is so important for men of all ages to watch their diets carefully and make sure that they are getting their daily allowances of vitamins. Since this task is sometimes impossible, supplementation is almost always recommended by physicians.

Health Check

It is not known why, but prostate tumors can soak up just about all of the vitamin C that you have in your system. Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation, healthy teeth and gums, bone health, defense against free radical damage, and a healthy immune system. Our vitamin C requirements can increase as we age, if we smoke, exercise, drink alcohol, take medications, or have any health problems. There are many genetic, physiological and environmental circumstances that can change your vitamin requirements, so you should talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins.

As men age, it becomes more and more important for them to focus on their prostate health. A diet low in saturated fat is recommended. When saturated fat is cooked, it releases free radicals that attack the nucleus and DNA of prostate cells, as well as many other cells in the body, resulting in cancer-causing mutations. It is believed that a diet high in fat and other environmental factors that increase free radical production put men at high risk for developing prostate cancer. Food additives, pollution, smoking and medications can cause oxidative stress in the body. You can protect your prostate cells by taking a daily multivitamin supplemented with extra antioxidants that attack free radicals and combat oxidative stress.

Another problem with prostate disorders is inflammation. Inflammation of the prostate causes it to swell up around the urethra causing problems with urination and the health of the prostate. This is how many men discover that they have prostate issues. Vitamins that reduce and prevent inflammation include vitamin C, A, B6, E, and D.

Vitamin C and E are powerful antioxidants that both attack and flush out free radicals, in addition to combating inflammation. Additionally, they form a protective shield around cells, actually inhibiting the spread of cancer. When combined with diet low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables, you can greatly improve your prostate's health. Vitamins and supplements can help you to protect yourself and boost your prostate's defenses. There may be other factors that determine your personal daily requirements for many vitamins, so it is and minerals, so it is advisable that you get some direction from your doctor before you buy vitamins.

Medical Billing - Multiple Batches

One of the most confusing parts of medical billing and the electronic submission of claims is the batch. Most billers don't understand why you even need to have multiple batches. Can't all the claims just go inside one package and get shipped? Well, with paper, yes. But if you're a big billing house and billing for a number of providers, then the process isn't that simple. Before we go into our detailed review of the YA0 record, an explanation of batches is probably in order.

Because of the way claims are paid, especially by the big insurance companies or government agencies, keeping track of batches is very important. Why? Because when insurance companies cut their checks for the claims, they are cut and paid to the provider, not to the patient, unless designated to do so. If a large billing house is representing multiple providers, they may very well submit a large claim file representing multiple providers. These providers are identified in the BA0 record in field number 2, positions 4 - 18, which is the provider ID. This record designates the beginning of that batch and this field designates the provider associated with that batch. If the biller wants to bill a second provider, then another BA0 record must be used so that the insurance carrier knows who the second carrier is. Otherwise, the check will end up getting cut for one provider. This can obviously cause a lot of problems.

Health Check

In order to make sure this doesn't happen, most electronic billing software has what is called a multiple provider option. What happens is that somewhere in the system, a list of providers is kept in a large table. In very large billing houses, this table can contain hundreds of providers. Each one is given an ID number and a table number. The ID number is assigned by the governing agency. The table number is assigned by the software. Each patient in the system is assigned to a provider. When that patient's claim file is pulled, a cross match is made between the table number of the provider that is entered in the patient file and the provider number itself. If the provider number is different from the previous provider number that was billed, a new BA0 record is created. Before this is done, however, the YA0 record is created to sum up the previous batch for the first provider.

This is of course greatly simplified, but hopefully you get the general idea. Once the YA0 record is created and filled in and the new BA0 record is created, your multiple batch system has just gone into effect. You simply repeat this process for each provider. The hard part for billers is making sure that the provider table ID is properly entered for each patient. Otherwise, the wrong provider will be paid for the services rendered.

In our next installment of medical billing and the electronic transmission of claims using NSF 3.01 specifications, we'll be covering the YA0 record in detail.

Medical Loans- What to do When You Need Money for Medical Treatment

Medical treatment is very expensive, but unlike most pricey items, it's not an optional or luxury purchase for those in need of treatment. Unfortunately, not everyone has health insurance. Even those who do have health insurance may not have sufficient coverage for all of their medical expenses. Many medical facilities have links with financial institutions which offer medical loans. These loans are cash advances made specifically for the purpose of medical intervention only, and are a financing option for people who are not able to pay for medical treatment on their own.

Medical loans are normally unsecured loans that are awarded on the basis of the applicant's credit record and earning capacity. The advantages of obtaining a medical loan are that you can undergo whatever medical procedure you require at the time when you need it without worrying about paying for the entire procedure at once. Medical loans typically have regular interest rates and so are not difficult to repay. Getting a medical loan is definitely much better than charging the medical bill to your credit card which could result in long term, high interest debt.

Health Check

Medical loans can be used not only for emergency medical interventions, but also for those that are not covered under health care insurance, such as cosmetic surgery, liposuction, dental cosmetic surgery, detoxification and similar other procedures that you feel are important to you but that your insurance company does not deem as medically necessary.

Where Do You Get Medical Loans?

There are many places to find medical loans. Before taking out a medical loan, you might want to run a search on the Internet to find out about the different sources of medical loans. You might also want to contact medical practices in your area to determine which lenders they recommend to their patients and check out their terms. As with any type of loan, it is a good idea to compare terms and conditions before signing a contract.

You could also get this information from your own doctor's office as well as from online and from other medical practices. Just make sure that you know the prevailing interest rates before you make a decision. Also be aware that sometimes the financial institutions offer medical practitioners a percentage for every person referred. Therefore, when you take the advice of your doctor's office without making comparisons, you cannot be sure you are getting the best offer.

Other Loans For Medical Treatment

In case you find that the medical loans are not suitable for you, you could always go for a regular loan. For example, homeowners might find a home equity line of credit or a second mortgage to be better a better option for them. Research carefully before you make your decision, so you can avail of the best possible offer.

When Can I Sue My Doctor? How Can a Medical Malpractice Lawyer Help Me?

Are you not satisfied with the medical treatment you received? Did you suffer any kind of a loss or an injury due your doctor's negligence? If yes, you can sue him/her based on the right you are due under the federal and state laws. However, as suing a health professional is not very easy, it is very necessary to hire a skilled, reputed Medical Malpractice Lawyer of your state in order to claim a reasonable compensation allowed by the law. The attorney will not only defend your case, but will also help you protect your rights.

Some element of risk is always present in all medical treatments, especially in cases that involve surgeries. If the patient has suffered an injury or a loss during any surgical procedure, and you feel that the physician or the surgeon is at fault, consulting a medical malpractice lawyer would prove beneficial.

Small Business Health Insurance - An Employer's Guide to Getting Small Business Health Insurance

Saving on your small business health insurance can be a challenge. But there are ways to overcome the financial obstacles and get the coverage necessary for your business. There are two major benefits of employer-based coverage. First these plans, although expensive, usually carry the best all around protection for you and your employees. Second, providing benefits plays a key role in attracting and retaining quality employees.

Why is coverage for small businesses so much more than for large corporations?

Health Check

Health insurance for small businesses cost so much because of the high quality coverage concentrated among a small group of people. Every individual within the group represents a different level of financial risk to an insurance company, and this risk is added up and spread out among the group. Large corporations pay considerably less because the risk is spread to such a large group, where small business owners can see unreasonably high increases in premiums due to one or two members. Small businesses also have to insure their employees under state mandates, which can require the policies to cover some specific health conditions and treatments. Large corporations' policies are under federal law, usually self-insured, and with fewer mandated benefits. The Erisa Act of 1974 officially exempted self-funded insurance policies from state mandates, lessening the financial burdens of larger firms.

Isn't the Health Care Reform Bill going to fix this?

This remains to be seen. There will be benefits for small business owners in the form of insurance exchanges, pools, tax credits, subsidies etc. But you can't rely on a bill that is still in the works, and you can't wait for a bill where the policies set forth won't take effect until about 2013. Additionally, the bill will help you with costs, but still won't prevent those costs from continually rising. You, as a business owner, will need to be fully aware of what you can do to maintain your bottom line.

What can I do?

First you need to understand the plan options out there. So here they are.

A preferred provider option (PPO) is a plan where your insurance provider uses a network of doctors and specialists. Whoever provides your care will file the claim with your insurance provider, and you pay the co-pay.

Who am I allowed to visit?

Your provider will cover any visit to a doctor or specialist within their network. Any care you seek outside the network will not be covered. Unlike an HMO, you don't have to get your chosen doctor registered or approved by your PPO provider. To find out which doctors are in your network, simply ask your doctor's office or visit your insurance company's website.

Where Can I Get it?

Most providers offer it as an option in your plan. Your employees will have the option to get it when they sign their employment paperwork. They generally decide on their elections during the open enrollment period, because altering the plan after this time period won't be easy.

And Finally, What Does It Cover?

Any basic office visit, within the network that is, will be covered under the PPO insurance. There will be the standard co-pay, and dependent upon your particular plan, other types of care may be covered. The reimbursement for emergency room visits generally range from sixty to seventy percent of the total costs. And if it is necessary for you to be hospitalized, there could be a change in the reimbursement. Visits to specialists will be covered, but you will need a referral from your doctor, and the specialist must be within the network.

A PPO is an expensive, yet flexible option for your small business health insurance. It provides great coverage though, and you should inquire with your provider to find out how you can reduce the costs.

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) are the most popular small business health insurance plans. Under an HMO plan you will have to register your primary care physician, as well as any referred specialists and physicians. Plan participants are free to choose specialists and medical groups as long as they are covered under the plan. And because HMOs are geographically driven, the options may be limited outside of a specific area.

Health maintenance organizations help to contain employer's costs by using a wide variety of prevention methods like wellness programs, nurse hotlines, physicals, and baby-care to name a few. Placing a heavy emphasis on prevention cuts costs by stopping unnecessary visits and medical procedures.

When someone does fall ill, however, the insurance provider manages care by working with health care providers to figure out what procedures are necessary. Usually a patient will be required to have pre-certification for surgical procedures that aren't considered essential, or that may be harmful.

HMOs are less expensive than PPOs, and this preventative approach to health care theoretically does keep costs down. The downside, however, is that employees may not pursue help when it is needed for fear of denial. That aside, it is a popular and affordable plan for your small business health insurance.

POS (Point of Service)

A Point of Service plan is a managed care insurance similar to both an HMO and a PPO. POS plans require members to pick a primary health care provider. In order to get reimbursed for out-of-network visits, you will need to have a referral from the primary provider. If you don't, however, your reimbursement for the visit could be substantially less. Out-of-network visits will also require you to handle the paperwork, meaning submit the claim to the insurance provider.

POSs provide more freedom and flexibility than HMOs. But this increased freedom results in higher premiums. Also, this type of plan can put a strain on employee finances when non-network visits start to pile up. Assess your needs and weigh all your options before making a decision.

An Exclusive Provider Organization Plan is another network-based managed care plan. Members of this plan must choose from a health care provider within the network, but exceptions can be made due to medical emergencies. Like HMOs, EPOs focus on preventative care and healthy living. And price wise, they fall between HMOs and PPOs.

The differences between an EPO and the other two organization plans are small, but important. While certain HMO and PPO plans offer reimbursement for out-of-network usage, an EPO does not allow its members to file a claim for doctor visits out its network. EPO plans are more restrictive in this respect, but are also able to negotiate lower fees by guaranteeing health care providers that it's members will use in-network doctors. These plans are also negotiated on a fee-for-services basis, whereas HMOs are on a per-person basis.

HSA (Health Savings Account)

An HSA is a tax-advantaged account used to pay existing and future medical expenses. HSAs are used in conjunction with high-deductible health plans (HDHP), which will make some with pre-existing conditions ineligible. Also, HSAs must be funded with cash. Communicating the terms of this account to your employees is important, as a large number of HSAs are underfunded or improperly funded. The health savings accounts were signed into the law by George Bush in 2003, and have become an affordable alternative to a group health plan.

When inquiring about an HSA, there will be a few things you will want to clarify. While HSAs generally cover routine medical expenses and copays, some can provide dental and vision care as well. And since HSAs can be combined with certain compatible plans, it is important to understand how money from the account will be allocated. And finally, you will want to know about cashing out your HSA balance. The amount is taxable and could be subject to a ten percent excise tax.

HRA (Health Reimbursement Arrangement)

An HRA is exactly what it sounds like. The employer reimburses the employee for health care. As an employer, you will usually have the option to contribute to a reimbursement fund, or to pay fees as they are incurred. These reimbursements can be deducted from your taxes, and are tax-free for your employees, saving you both money.

Some providers empower employers by giving them more options. HRAs, unlike HSAs, don't have to be funded with cash money, placing a book keeping entry on your balance sheet is enough. You can usually control aspects of your arrangement such as reimbursement limits, whether you or your employee pays first, and if the previous year's funds roll over.

HRAs are becoming a more popular option because of the control it has given small businesses. Combined with a high deductible health plan (HDHP), an HRA could be the most cost-effective solution to your small business health insurance problems. It's always best to compare these plans to PPOs, HMOs, and EPOs to know what works best.

Fee for Service (FFS) or Traditional Indemnity

A fee for service plan is the most flexible small business health insurance option. You choose your doctor, and your hospital. You can see a specialist without a referral. This flexibility, however, comes with more out-of-pocket expenses and higher insurance premiums.

The typical FFS plan has a deductible ranging anywhere from five to fifteen hundred dollars. After this amount is reached, the provider will pick up eighty percent of your medical bills, and require you to pay the remaining twenty percent. Because of the rising costs of health care, and the potential for a small number of doctor's visits to cost thousands, these plans can become incredibly expensive.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

A flexible spending account is a savings account to be used for medical expenses, and is funded by pre-tax dollars. Using pre-tax dollars means that your employees will actually show that they have less income, and will therefore have less taxes withheld. As an employer, you set the limit on contributions to the account per year. In addition to the employee contribution, you can also credit the account, or fund it completely from your general assets.

An FSA, especially if combined with an HDHP, can significantly reduce the costs of small business health insurance.

You should be forewarned, money from FSA accounts cannot be rolled over. They are, however, available to use for two years and two and half months after the benefit year. A terminated employee won't be able to use leftover funds, unless there is a positive remaining balance and COBRA is elected.

Small business health insurance providers have made significant improvements in their services to simplify the administration of your plan. With HRAs, FSAs, and HSAs, your employees can use debit cards for medical transactions. Be sure to research this thoroughly. You will want to be sure your debit card plan is IRS compliant, and that you can use a large number of pharmacies. You should also pick a plan that can verify eligibility on the spot. Talk with your agent about linking transit, parking fees, and prescriptions to the same card. When picking the debit card options, please be sure to clarify the details of the substantion process. This is IMPORTANT! With other plans, the provider may assign someone to manage your plan. Or you may have to hire someone. Still, you should be able to login to your account and print insurance cards, important papers etc.

The next thing you can do is thoroughly assess your needs. Being that every member of your small business plays a key role in its success, it is vital that their needs are met. And understanding these needs is crucial to finding the right plan. Find out about chronic illnesses, and additional information related to past health issues. Know what your employees think about health insurance, and get them involved in the process.

Hiring an agent or a broker

Finding and understanding small business health insurance can be a daunting task. While some choose to go it alone, others need some professional assistance. You need to understand the difference between an agent and a broker, and how you can get the most from either of them.

A broker

Brokers function independently and usually work for several different companies. Since they have a variety of resources, they can usually provide more options and a better overall view of the marketplace. Brokers will assist you by evaluating the costs and designs of plans from your local major carriers. The cost isn't everything, you want to get the coverage that you need.

Ask the broker how he or she is getting paid for their services. They should readily divulge that information. Some brokers may charge you a flat free. Some receive a fee from an employer, while others receive a commission from the insurance provider. Any commissions could be reflected in your premiums, but not to the point that you should worry.

An agent

Agents typically provide services for one company. They have a closer relationship to the insurance company than a broker would, giving them more leverage to make alterations to your plan. In some cases they can offer a particular plan for less than a broker, and may have access to additional services like worker's compensation. To find out what different providers have to offer, talk to more than one agent. It may be time-consuming, but it could bring you closer to the most cost-effective solution for your small business health insurance.

One of the common options presented by agents is the employee-elect option. This is an arrangement where employees pick the plan they prefer. Those who don't need as much coverage won't be forced to pay so much, and those who do need it can get it without increasing the financial burden of the company as a whole.

How to Save On Your Small Business Health Insurance Plan

What's important to remember is that there really is no inexpensive solution to health care. Even if your initial premiums are reasonably low, they could rise significantly at your next renewal. So saving money on small business health insurance is about doing a combination of things simultaneously to get good rates, and to then maintain those rates.. And it will require a consistent effort from you, your employees, and your insurance provider.

First, you can save yourself money by reading the fine print. You need to know exactly what your plan does and DOESN'T cover. There are also state mandated coverages. For example, in states like Illinois, your insurance must cover mammograms. Also, understanding the ins and outs of your plan will give you and your employees a better idea of how to deal with your insurance.

Next, you should shave unnecessary benefits. After reading all about your plan, you will find coverage for things you may not need. Eliminating these benefits can significantly drop monthly small business health insurance premiums. For example, eliminating coverage for brand name medications can reduce costs by more than 25 percent.

Wellness program have worked wonders for small businesses. A wellness program is any program designed to promote healthy living within the organization. Weight loss competitions benefit every participant. Add a financial incentive for further motivation. Stock the work fridge with water, and leave literature about healthy living lying around. Search the internet for calorie counting charts. Raising awareness entice workers to make positive changes. Active, exercising, diet-conscious employees have stronger immune systems, more vitality, and more productive workplaces. They also don't deal with as many health issues. Fewer doctor visits and hospitilizations will help maintain lower annual premiums, because it will prove to your insurance provider that your business is a low financial risk.

Increasing your co-pay and deductible can go a long way towards cutting costs. For instance, raising co-pays by just ten dollars has saved companies as much as thirteen percent on their premiums. A higher deductible will significantly reduce your monthly premium. To lessen the financial burden of high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), combine them with an HSA. Combinations like these have saved both business owners and employees bundles of cash.

Check into getting a nurse hotline. A nurse hotline is a toll free, 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week service. Employees can get medical advice from qualified, registered nurses. This method has deterred a large number of people from emergency visits, and it can also be used for preventative care as well. Insurers like Nationwide have them, or you may have to purchase from a third-party provider.

Increase the size of your group to reduce your monthly small business health insurance premiums. In a survey by America's Health Insurance Plans, small businesses who employed ten people or less paid forty three more dollars on average than businesses with twenty six to fifty employees. Check around with other businesses owners, or fellow members of business organizations. Some states also have small business groups and pools for this purpose. Check with your state Chamber of Commerce and Department of Insurance.

Beware of heavily discounted plans. First, there are numerous scammers trying to get your money. They promise low rates, and usually cover little to nothing at all. The internet is notorious for swindlers trying to hustle you out of a buck. If you are going with a company you aren't familiar with, please do your research. On another note, even reputable companies present problems. In an attempt to gain market share, Blue Cross offered small businesses discounted rates in 2008. For 2009, some of these same businesses were set to see increases of as much as 47% in their premiums. As the costs of medical care increases, the costs are shifted from the insurer to the insured, and discount plans become overpriced plans quickly.

Shop around. As mentioned before, talking to different agents will expose you to the best that insurance providers have to offer. Ask other small business owners about their providers. You can use trusted online resources like Netquote and Ehealthinsurance to shop around instantly. These services also let you compare plans side by side, and allow you to purchase your plan online. Even after you get your initial plan, it's good to annually reevaluate your coverage. This will keep you on the up-and-up about what the market is offering. Keeping costs down is an ongoing effort, especially with rates and plans changing all the time from company to company.

Share some of the costs with your employees. Raising employee contributions isn't a popular option, but it may be one of the only ways to absorb costs and maintain small business health insurance coverage. Communicate with your employees about how to keep costs down, and remind them that their increase is your increase as well.

The sad truth is that, no matter how many cost-cutting methods you apply, your insurance premiums are expected to continually rise. In addition to this, you can't prevent every health problem with exercise and higher co-pays.

The Health Care Reform Bill won't kick in until about 2013, so waiting on its benefits won't do you any good. There is definitely a need for change, because the current system discourages competition and growth. With smaller businesses functioning as the backbone of this ailing economy, company medical insurance must BE affordable, and STAY affordable.

Florida State Health Insurance

Florida state health insurance is the best solution for people who are denied sufficient insurance coverage due to their medial conditions. This is an affordable health insurance plan initiated by the Florida Legislature. The flexibility of state health insurance is far superior to the normal choices like individual health insurances and group health insurances. Most programs in Florida state health insurance provide coverage at affordable rates that can well fit the budgets of all qualifying Floridian families.

For people who have low income, Florida state health insurance has the Medicaid program that they could possible qualify for. Your local Division of Family Services office will provide the necessary information and the prescribed application form. Interesting thing here is the number of people who would actually qualify for this service but most people think they would not. The program requires filling out an application and providing some documentation about your finances. The policy issued by this program covers medical expenses of the entire family, including dental work, eye care, doctor visits, emergency care, and prescription drugs.

Health Check

For people with children who do not get coverage through their employment, Florida state health insurance has programs to insure the health of children. One of the programs is the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation (FHKC), which provides private sector health care coverage to uninsured children in 24 counties using school districts as large risk pools. Child plans cover a full range of services from regular check-ups, preventive care, immunization, lab tests, to hospital visits and other related expenses. Besides, the State of Florida extends Medicaid coverage to children aged between 15 and 19 with family incomes up to 100% of the federal poverty level (""Waxman Children"").

Florida state health insurance plan is also open to "federally eligible individuals" as defined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act 1996 (HIPPA). The act protects health insurance coverage for you and your family when you change or lose your job.

Florida state health insurance policies have been designed to give relief to families who do not qualify for highly rated health insurance programs nor have the ability to pay the expensive installments of private insurance.

Health Benefits of Quinoa

The ancient seed of Quinoa is so versatile and such an important source of nutrients that it has been referred to as the "gold" of the Incas. It is known to increase stamina, a useful aid in days gone by when "warriors" needed every bit of advantage they could get when their "people" were under attack.

However, such is the structure of Quinoa, it has the benefit of being a natural and complete protein. This means that it has all the amino acids like acid lysine which is very important for the repair and growth of body tissue. As shown below, it is known to be beneficial to the body in a number of ways - nature's natural remedy.

Health Check

Migraines and hypertension

Riboflavin and magnesium are the natural aids in Quinoa for bad headaches. They are known to help relax the blood vessels, which reduces constriction and so eases tension. Basically they help the body to function better which in turn eases the stress the body experiences when circumstances make it over work. While no one claims it makes headaches go away, it can help and is known to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

Childhood Asthma

Many allergies are connected with grass seeds but Quinoa is not a grass. It is a plant but is not known to produce serious allergic reactions in people. Asthma is the result of breathing difficulties that are made worse by tension. It is known to have triggers and often there is a family history of asthma. It is known to have got worse over the years and many experts point to our modern living conditions as making it more prevalent. While not all asthma attacks are caused by allergies which may or may not be avoidable, it is known that Quinoa helps to reduce body stress and helps to keep the airways open. It is recommended that children with asthma eat a whole food diet. Many of the nutrients that we need are in Quinoa such as Magnesium which naturally helps to reduce spasms in the bronchial tubes. We know that many asthma sufferers are short of vitamin b, minerals like magnesium, zinc and iron all of which can be found in Quinoa. Why not check out some of the recipes and see which ones are easiest to include in your child's diet.

This is another surprising area where Quinoa is known to be useful. It may not get rid of gallstones but it can help protect their development. Indeed this is another case where a wholesome diet rich in fiber can aid in the digestion of foodstuffs. As it is a soluble fiber it speeds through the intestines and reduces the need of increased bile production. Too much bile production helps to develop gallstones so this is another natural remedy for our bodies.

Type 2 Diabetes

Quinoa is rich in magnesium which is a mineral that is essential in the body's ability to deal with glucose and insulin. Yet again there is evidence that Quinoa, as part of a whole food diets aids in the digestion of foods. It is also known to increase Insulin sensitivity while reducing triglycerides (blood fats which need to be kept low in diabetics).

Heart Disease

Quinoa is known to prevent the clogging of arteries and veins which in turn helps to relieve stresses on the heart. The fat in Quinoa is good fat in that is low in cholesterol and can help reduce blood pressure thanks to the presence of potassium and magnesium. In other words it is a good source of protein without the drawbacks of too much saturated fat and cholesterol.

Pregnant Mums

Quinoa is known to be an endurance food which gives energy. It is also known to be a good source of Iron which pregnant mums are always advised to increase in their diet. It is good for tissue repair and development of teeth and bones. Along with the other benefits of Quinoa, it is a useful source of goodness that forming babies will demand in plenty as they grow. It is also good for Mums when they are feeding as it will improve the quality of milk for new-born infants.

Quinoa is thought to help prevent cataracts and may aid those with the condition. Studies have shown that people who absorb about 99 grams of protein were only half as likely to develop nuclear cataracts(light is difficult to pass through the centre of the eye) while those with the greater polyunsaturated fats about 17 grams a day were 30 percent likely not to develop problems with the outer lens(corticular cataracts).

Nowadays, we are looking more and more to natural foods. We all know the benefits of fibre in our diet but until more recently we have forgotten about Quinoa.

Steps to Take Before Applying for Medical School

If you think getting into medical school is easy, think again. The whole application process can be very stressful and expensive, depending on how many schools you want to apply to. To get started, you should have an idea of which medical schools you want to apply to.

When you have a list of schools you want to apply to, start off by visiting each school's website to find out what the admission's requirements are. Many medical colleges require prerequisites in many science courses such as biology, chemistry, physics, and more. Be sure to talk to your campus science department to determine the general science classes you have to take. In most cases, medical schools require a minimum of B in all the major prerequisite courses before any consideration is given to students that are applying. It is important to note that lab is also required with every science class.

Health Check

The next step that isn't on the school curriculum but is just as important are extracurricular activities, try to find an activity relevant to the medical field. The best thing to do is to volunteer at the local hospital or health clinic so that when the time comes, they will write a recommendation letter for you which will boost your chances of admittance. Some schools require recommendation letters. The best thing to do is to get them from your professors and from places you have volunteered at.

Now, one of the most important things that are required for any consideration into any medical school is your MCAT score. It is the exam that determines whether or not you have the competency to pursue a medical degree. Many schools require a minimum MCAT score of 22 to apply but don't make that your goal when taking the exam, you want to aim for 30 or higher.

After completing the previous requirements, the next is the actual application. Many schools require applicants to apply on the AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) website and each school usually requires a fee to apply, ranging from -0 which is not refundable. Once again, be sure to go over each medical school's admission requirements as each college requires something different so it's best to double check everything before applying.

It is definitely a much more stressful experience applying for medical school than it is to take premed courses to obtain eligibility because every medical school receives thousands of applicants and only a small percentage gain acceptance. The competition is fierce but having the right mindset to becoming a doctor and obtaining a medical degree will pay off.

Accident Health Insurance Plans

Guide to Accident Health Insurance Plans in the United States

Accident health insurance plans are attracting a lot of attention in the supplemental accident coverage market because it's so practical. This type of personal injury insurance plan falls into the indemnity category rather then the insurance category. Indemnity's compensate you for damage, loss, or injury in cash payments to you directly or the health care provider. These plans are guarantee issue and require no health questions when enrolling. Americans who have this clever type of accident plan receive benefits with any doctor, emergency room hospital, or urgent care type facility. Members can choose a benefit amount (policy face value) of ,500, ,000, ,500, or ,000. These principal sum benefits are payed per accident (per injury). Typical deductible (deductible is the dollar amount person must pay before insurance company pays) is 0 dollars and all other hospital bills are payed up to the policy max. If someone has the ,000 benefit accident plan and gets injured, resulting into a a ,000 dollar ACL knee surgery, it could potentially only cost the member 0 dollars out of pocket. Member can also choose any surgeon for the procedure which is comforting.

Health Check

Personal accident insurance are membership plans that have monthly dues. These association benefits clearly state they are not insurance but a type of accident medical expense plan. Coverage is for bodily injuries and not disease or sickness. Emergency room coverage is the core focus. Other names for this type of plan include supplemental accident coverage, emergency room insurance, accident medical expense benefit, accident health insurance plan, 24 hour accident coverage, and accident medical coverage. Anyone who's had a high deductible insurance plan knows that a lot of bills come from the emergency room.

Association based membership benefits isn't anything new. The main benefit to these plans are affordable monthly dues, everyone qualifies, and benefits are paid in conjunction with any licensed medical care facility or doctor. The applications don't have any health questions during enrollment but automatic acceptance is only up to age 64 or 70.

Everyone being able to qualify for a personal accident insurance plan is a good thing. Flexibility for members to choose any doctors office, medical clinic, or hospital emergency room makes sense because this is a type of accidental injury policy. When I was researching these plans and gathering all the sales brochures, having the ability to choose any doctor, clinic, or hospital ER was consistent and true. The accident medical coverage usually has a 0 dollar deductible and a per member coverage amount of ,500, ,000, ,500, or ,000. Plans pay part of the bills you are charged at the doctor, hospital, ER, up to the maximum benefit chosen per covered injury. Another way to phrase that is a personal injury insurance plan pays for all bodily injuries from a accident, less the 0 deductible, up to the maximum benefit of ,500, ,000, ,500, or ,000.

In most circumstances these plans pay accidental injury benefits. Except for injuries a member sustains while under the influence of drugs / alcohol, during act of war, or if also covered on workers compensation. These are standard rules for just about any health insurance product. Injury benefits are payed to members per incident or per injury. During coverage, each accident is treated as a new event with new benefit payments, but subject to another 0 dollar deductible. Benefits are paid directly to members or the health care provider. Some plans only pay the health care provider, and other plans clearly state they pay the member directly. You'll have to review the policy to see how payment is handled.

Specific benefits covered by this type of personal injury insurance plan include: doctors fee for surgery (inpatient or outpatient), ambulance expenses, doctors visits, hospital emergency room care, anesthesia services, prescription drugs, nurse expenses, hospital confinement, operating room, laboratory tests, x-rays, MRI's, dental treatment to sound natural teeth, physical therapy, hospital room and board.

During my research of checking out dozens of these accident insurance plans it was interesting to find out that a lot of these plans are underwritten by Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company. This means that Guarantee Trust Life is "backing" this type of personal accident coverage and that hundreds of health insurance firms are marketing the plans for them. So there are a lot of different agencies selling these plans but the trail leads back to one main insurance company. Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company has been around for 70 plus years and is located at 1275 Milwaukee Ave. Glenview, Illinois 60025. Of all the different firms selling these plans the best rates I've found so far is the following.

For individuals, a ,000 benefit plan is around a month, ,500 benefit is a month, and a ,000 is dollars a month. For families, ,000 benefit is a month, ,500 is a month, and ,000 is dollars a month. The ,000 accident benefit plan at dollars a month includes the entire family. Even if the family has six members, it's still a month total. Bigger the family, the more that a month membership stretches. Anyway you look at it, that is a lot of useful real world coverage for that price.

Personal accident insurance plans are sold by some health insurance agents to compliment their clients HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan). Due to medical inflation and the constant rate increases from insurance companies, typical deductibles these days are ,000 and ,000. Deductible is the dollar amount a covered person must pay before the health insurance policy kicks in. This basically means the insured has to come up with that ,000 or ,000 dollars before the policy pays anything. This is where the common complaint that "my health insurance plan doesn't pay anything" comes from. What people are saying is that when they rush to the emergency room from a accidental injury, odds are they will be paying that deductible out of pocket on top of the expensive premiums every month. It's for this reason that emergency room insurance plans offset that deductible exposure. Plans help pay the expenses associated with accidents which is realistic. This upfront accident coverage can pay off that huge deductible. In short, these accident insurance policies fill in the gaps perfect with the catastrophic high deductible plans being offered in the United States. Picking up a accident plan as a "stand alone" supplement is equally as smart.

Getting Health Insurance For Pregnant Women

Although it is important for everyone to have a health insurance, it is particularly important in the context of pregnant women. The reason is obvious: there are many things that can go wrong during pregnancy, or could be made better if the woman is aware of certain facts. Therefore, it is essential that pregnant women periodically receive check-ups in order to make sure the pregnancy is progressing properly and there are no detectable problems with their unborn child.

Unfortunately, many pregnant women do not have health insurance. It has been statistically shown that when they deliver, their babies are more likely to have low birth weight and higher incidents of death.

Health Check

Getting an insurance while pregnant has become significant today because of the towering cost of health insurance in the United States. According to the American Health Association, 41 million Americans are not insured, and around 13% pregnant women in the country do not possess any form of health insurance. This puts these women and their unborn children at risk.

Prenatal checkups can be very expensive, not to mention hospital and delivery charges which could cost ,000 or more. Furthermore, if there are complications, such as premature birth or the woman requires a cesarean section, the costs would be much greater. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for pregnant women to find a way to obtain health insurance.

The problem is that most companies do not accept new insurance policies from pregnant women whose pregnancy has been assessed as a pre-existing condition. Ideally, if you are a woman and you know you wish to get pregnant, things would be much easier for you if you got health insurance before you got pregnant. That being said, if you are uninsured and found out you are pregnant, here are some useful tips that could help you obtain health insurance:

First, shop around - search the internet - for health insurance companies who can provide pregnancy health coverage and discounted health care coverage. It is easy to get free instant quotes from multiple providers. Some may very well be more affordable than others.

Second, there are some federally funded programs which offer healthcare coverage for low income people. Medicaid, for example, allows you to enroll in a health insurance plan even when you are pregnant. An additional program is CHIP. Some states have specialized programs for this purpose: investigate whether your state offers one.

Third, look for additional benefits provided by other agencies. WIC is a federal agency that offers health services to low income women and children under 5, and also provides food supplements.

Finally, if you are in a position where you have several options, make sure you choose your plan carefully: choose the plan which covers all the benefits you may require. For example a hospital-only plan will not cover visits to a physician's clinic.
